Hardball
Are You Playing to Play or Playing to Win?
Harvard Business Press, 2004, 175 pages
Hardball is a study of companies that achieve industry dominance through the relentless pursuit of a competitive edge through what the author calls “hardball strategies.” These are companies that employ one or more tactics that lagging competitors often call unfair: overwhelming competition through sheer numbers, raising competitors’ costs, breaking compromises, and exploiting weaknesses. Companies that fail to use these tactics, the authors contend, run the risk of falling behind or failing entirely.
